Re: American Beauty Project |
why doesn't anyone ever cover or interpret Dead songs? Is it that people don't know the breadth of their incredible songbook?
I hear a folk version of Brokedown Palace yesterday by some lady. Nothing special but it was great to hear the Dead get their due.

They've actually been covered quite a bit, when you think about it.
Not to the extent of Dylan or Lennon & McCartney, but quite a few times.

Re: American Beauty Project |
JOTS, I know you know that Cracker and Elvis Costello routinely do so in their live shows. As does Ryan Adams (btw, great article in new Relix - available online - about him and relationship w/ Phil), Willie Nelson now does Stella Blue in concert (thanks to Ryan). Of course Los Lobos often does Bertha as well as Not Fade Away (which owes more to Jer than Buddy Holly -but I know not a cover). I've seen, many moons ago, the Chilli Peppers do an acapella version of Friend of the Devil into Anarchy in the UK at the Fillmore.
And this was posted by Chris Freedom a long time ago - I think it is a great cover:

Ah; but I thought "Primus sucks"?
JK; I have no clue as I don't know the folks, but just recall that as a poster's motto hereabouts. I take it that was not you...

Re: American Beauty Project |
"It was during these early years that the catch phrase "Primus Sucks" was started. It began with people constantly stating to the band just how good they were. One day when someone told the band they were good, Claypool turned around and said "No, we suck" and from then on it stuck. The band's catchphrase is no longer "Primus Sucks!" because the band thought it became tiresome, although it was a tradition that dated back to their first album, and many fans still chant it at concerts."

OK, geezer recovery of sorts...feeling ever so slightly better about my limited knowledge of current events. Of course, recognized them from SoPark, and now that you say "Les" I make the connection to OHead, which my kids liked and turned me onto...
Wheww...not a complete dumbass. Close though.

There was the "Deadicated" tribute album, which was entirely Dead covers. My favorite on that was Midnight Oil doing a strident version of "Wharf Rat"...

Re: American Beauty Project |
Here is a really nice Scarlet Begonias cover from a surprising source. Nice shout out to Jerry and Deadheads in the introduction too.
